Description
This antique GILB guitar was purchased for a teenage boy(who later became a college professor) back in 1956 by his mother who wanted him to pursue music. He strummed it a few times, put it into storage, and then promptly pursued learning to play the piano.
This guitar does not have an interior label,
nor did it ever have one.
Its only identifying mark is a decal on the top of the back of the head.
Its original case is included.
This instrument measures 39-1/2” stem to stern,
with a body length of 19-5/8”.
The upper bout is 10-7/8” across, middle bout is 9-5/8”, and lower bout is 14-1/8”.
The ribs measure 3-3/4” at the neck and progress to 4” at the butt.
The center of the 12
th
fret is at 12-3/4” from the nut
and from the bridge
(give or take), and the vibrating string length is 25-1/2”.
Most importantly, the
octave pitch is true
, and we were able to verify this electronically.
The fret width is 2” at the head and progresses to 2-3/8” at the body.
There is no doubt
that this vintage guitar will need a new set of strings;
they have been replaced one at a time as they have broken through the years and are not uniformly the same age.
We are not sure if this was by accident or by design,
but there is a “crackle” texture to the varnish on the back of the neck (see photos).
This is unusual as the finish on the remainder of the guitar is as “smooth as glass” with the exception of a few superficial strumming marks on the face of the body.
